Operation Red Wings was a military operation conducted by the United States during the War in Afghanistan. It took place in the Kunar Province of northeastern Afghanistan from June 27 to July 4, 2005.

The objective of the operation was to disrupt Taliban activities in the region and gather intelligence on their leadership. The operation involved a four-man Navy SEAL reconnaissance team, consisting of Lieutenant Michael P. Murphy, Petty Officer Second Class Matthew G. Axelson, Petty Officer Second Class Danny P. Dietz, and Petty Officer Second Class Marcus Luttrell.

The team was inserted into the rugged mountains near the Pakistan border and tasked with surveilling a suspected Taliban leader. However, their mission quickly turned into a fierce battle when they were ambushed by a large enemy force.

Despite being outnumbered and heavily outgunned, the SEAL team fought valiantly. They called for reinforcements and engaged in a fierce firefight that lasted for hours. Lieutenant Murphy, in a selfless act of bravery, exposed himself to enemy fire in order to make a distress call for help.

Tragically, three out of the four SEAL team members were killed in action. Only Marcus Luttrell survived, although he sustained severe injuries. The operation resulted in the largest loss of life for U.S. Navy SEALs since the Vietnam War.

Operation Red Wings gained significant media attention and was later depicted in the book "Lone Survivor" by Marcus Luttrell, as well as the subsequent film adaptation. The operation highlighted the bravery and sacrifices made by the members of the U.S. military in their fight against terrorism.
