In the village of Wali, during the New Yam Festival, Uu and her friend Oisa are caught by Uu's father, Madu, while trying to hide a colorful dress made of leaves. Madu, who disapproves of Uu's passion for dressmaking, is furious and punishes Uu by confining her to her deceased mother's room for a month. During this time, Uu uses food to cope with her isolation, developing a food addiction.

When Uu finally emerges, she learns from the queen that Oisa has left for Warrior Camp, which means she won’t see him for five years. Devastated, Uu returns to her mother's room in sorrow. Madu, seeing his daughter's distress, decides to support her dressmaking by allowing her to pursue it on the condition that she also trains as a herbalist. Although Uu is thrilled, her food addiction remains a concern. She faces further mockery from villagers, particularly from a girl named Nono, who resents her due to her association with Oisa and her dressmaking passion.
