"Maligno sa Puno" is a Tagalog horror animation based on a true story about a family living near a mysterious and ancient tree in their village. The story follows Rico, a young boy who frequently plays near the tree, which the locals believe is home to a maligno (evil spirit). Despite warnings from his parents and neighbors to stay away, Rico is drawn to the tree's strange allure.
One day, while playing, Rico feels an inexplicable pull to the tree and decides to climb it. As he reaches the top, he experiences a chilling sensation, and dark shadows begin to emerge around him. Soon after, strange occurrences start happening in the villageāanimals go missing, crops fail, and people report seeing ghostly figures near the tree.
Concerned for his son, Rico's father seeks help from a local albularyo (healer), who reveals that the tree is a conduit for malevolent spirits and that Rico has unwittingly angered the maligno by climbing it. To protect his family and the village, they must perform a ritual to appease the spirit and break the curse surrounding the tree.
In a suspenseful climax, Rico and his family confront the maligno, using the knowledge of the albularyo to restore peace to their home and the village.
"Maligno sa Puno" explores themes of curiosity, respect for nature, and the consequences of ignoring local folklore, blending elements of Filipino beliefs with supernatural horror. The animation highlights the importance of understanding and respecting the spirits that inhabit the natural world.
