"Santo Ninong Huwad" is a Tagalog horror animation based on a true story that revolves around a family's unsettling experience with a fake Santo Niño (Holy Child) statue. The narrative follows Rhea, a young woman who inherits an ornate statue from her late grandmother, believed to bring blessings and protection to the family.
Excited to display the Santo Niño in her home, Rhea begins to notice strange occurrences after setting it up. Unexplained noises, shadows moving in the corners of her vision, and a growing sense of dread plague the household. As tensions rise, her family members start experiencing nightmares and feelings of unease, leading Rhea to suspect that something is wrong with the statue.
Concerned for their safety, Rhea consults a local albularyo (healer), who reveals that the statue may be a huwad (false) representation. It is said that impostor statues can attract negative spirits and curses instead of blessings. To lift the dark influence, Rhea must confront the truth behind the statue and seek forgiveness from the spirits offended by its presence.
In a gripping climax, Rhea and her family perform rituals to cleanse their home and rid themselves of the malevolent forces. The story emphasizes themes of faith, deception, and the importance of respecting cultural beliefs regarding sacred objects.
