Chase auditions for a school play but fails to land the lead role. However, after the original lead, Ronnie, declines due to a Broadway opportunity, Julie is tasked with choosing a replacement. Chase, with encouragement from his friends, decides to manipulate Julie by pretending to like her, hoping she'll recommend him for the role. Julie, who has had a crush on Chase for years, agrees to help him improve his singing and ultimately recommends him for the part.
However, Chase's scheme begins to unravel when Julie learns the truth from his friends. She feels betrayed, especially after realizing that Chase already has a girlfriend, Madison, and was only using her to get the lead role. During a performance, Chase makes a public confession, apologizing to Julie and admitting his feelings for her. Despite his heartfelt apology, Julie cannot forgive him, and she arranges for an understudy to replace him in the show.
Chase learns a valuable lesson: lying may get you what you want in the short term, but it can cost you everything in the end.
