The story introduces Craig Schwartz, a struggling puppeteer whose career hasn't taken off. His marriage to Lotte is strained; she is an animal enthusiast with their home crowded with pets, and she often urges Craig to find a more stable job.

One day, Craig finds a newspaper ad for a file clerk position at Lester Corp. When he arrives, he discovers the company is on the 7th and a half floor, where the low ceiling forces employees to bend over. Craig meets the CEO, Dr. Lester, who is friendly and promptly offers him the job. Craig then proceeds to the orientation room to start his new role.
