In a dystopian future, the world faces collapse due to overpopulation and pollution, with a permanent smog covering the cities. To address the crisis, the government imposes a drastic measure: no babies will be born for the next 30 years. Any newborns will be killed, and their parents executed. However, exceptions are made for current pregnancies; these babies will be registered and tracked with electronic imprints to prevent unauthorized births.
Eight years later, amidst continued smog and overcrowding, a corporation called Babyland offers robotic children to fulfill the parental desires of couples. These robots can walk, talk, and simulate various experiences, providing a semblance of real parenthood. A salesman demonstrates these features to a couple, who choose a name for their robotic child.
