In a distant future where humanity has colonized other planets, the story begins with a young girl, Indi, narrating about her father, Kane. Once an Air Force officer on Earth, Kane was involved in a mission failure that led to the death of his entire crew. Accused of substance abuse but without concrete evidence, he was dismissed from the military without formal charges. Guilt-ridden, Kane spiraled into alcoholism, which ultimately destroyed his marriage. Seeking a fresh start, he took a job with a terraforming company named Exon on the planet Osiris, overseeing infrastructure planning and managing a spaceship called Flotilla. Exon is exploiting Osiris’s resources, using convicts from Earth for the labor.
