The movie opens with a note about the constant noise in New York City, setting the stage for the story. We meet Sam, a cancer patient, who participates in a therapy group with her cat, Frodo. She initially offends the group with a harsh critique of her surroundings but is praised by the caretaker, Reuben. Reuben invites Sam and the other patients to a theater outing in Manhattan, promising pizza to persuade her despite her dislike for the city. At the theater, where they watch a puppet show, Sam connects with a man named Henry and his son, who is fond of Frodo. Although Sam seems to enjoy the show, she becomes emotional and starts crying.
