The movie begins in Australia, where 19-year-old JR is transported to prison after being sentenced to 6 months for a minor offense. Coming from a troubled background, JR adjusts to the prison's harsh routine and meets his cellmate, Eric, who seems genuinely scared.

As JR settles in, he observes Brendan Lynch, a notorious armed robber, playing chess during break time. Brendan appears to be secretly coordinating with a businessman named Sam over the phone, though they seem to be playing chess as a cover for a more sinister plan.
