The movie opens in December 1941 during the Nazi invasion of the Soviet Union. A German military truck arrives in a snowy area with a captured Russian couple, one of whom is dressed as Hitler. The couple explains they are actors performing in a theater, but the Germans are offended and demand a performance. When the act fails to impress, the German commander orders their execution.
