The movie begins on a train from London to Tonbridge, where Dr. Lewis Shaler is traveling with his young son, Max. Shaler, who is a widower, is heading home with Max. During the journey, Max accidentally spills coffee on fellow passenger Sarah's coat. Shaler apologizes and offers to pay for the damages, but Sarah declines and they start chatting. Sarah seems to be taken with Shaler.
