The movie opens in 33 AD with Roman soldier Clavius walking through the Judean desert. He stops at an inn, where the innkeeper, noticing Clavius's high rank, is curious about his presence in such a remote area. Clavius then recounts recent events.

In a flashback, Clavius is seen fighting in a battle. The Roman Empire has controlled Judea for 30 years, during which the Jewish people have been hoping for a savior from their God, Yahweh. Clavius, who is discontented with his role, is tasked with suppressing Jewish dissent under the governor’s orders, primarily seeking promotion and retirement.
