The story begins with university professor Julian Reed giving a lecture on Neanderthals, highlighting the discovery of the world’s only non-fossilized Neanderthal remains, named William, found by his boss, Dr. Godwin Thomas. Julian proposes that William’s DNA could be used to create a living Neanderthal.

Intrigued by this idea, Dr. Barbara Sullivan, a medical doctor with a PhD in reproductive endocrinology, discusses the feasibility of cloning William with Julian over dinner. Although the process would be complex, Barbara is convinced by Julian's argument that reviving a Neanderthal could offer invaluable scientific insights. They gain university approval and begin their project, developing a romantic relationship along the way.
