The movie opens in Montevideo, Uruguay, in October 1972, where the Old Christians Club rugby team, despite a loss in a recent match, is excited about an upcoming trip to Chile.

The plane, carrying 45 passengers including 19 players, their families, and friends, departs without incident. Among the passengers are Numa, a law student and narrator, and three cousins: Daniel, Fito, and Eduardo Strauch.
