The story centers on Michael, a young man who, after emerging from a challenging foster care system, struggles to succeed in a world full of obstacles. Michael, along with a friend, is noticed for his athletic talent by Coach Bird Cotton at Wingate Christian School, despite facing prejudice and academic struggles. After being admitted to the school, Michael arrives with his belongings in a plastic bag, leading to negative perceptions from classmates and teachers. His low academic performance continues to frustrate the school staff. Meanwhile, a wealthy businessman, Sean Tui, notices Michael’s unusual behavior at a volleyball match but initially takes no action.
