In 1898, prospector Daniel Plainview is mining a promising ore vein when he discovers silver. He uses dynamite to expand the hole but accidentally trips and breaks his leg during the explosion. In intense pain, he gathers silver stones in his shirt and manages to drag himself out of the pit. Afterward, he takes the silver sample to an assay office, where he receives a certificate for his silver and gold claim.
