The movie opens during World War II, featuring the US B-24 Liberators in the Pacific. Led by bombardier Louis Zamperini, the crew successfully executes a bombing mission on the Japanese-controlled island of Nauru. However, they soon come under heavy fire from Japanese fighter planes, causing significant damage.
