The story opens on a dark and eerie night with Royal Abbott carrying a dead body. As he walks, his voice narrates a story about Chronos, the Greek God of Time, who used a sickle to separate the known world from the unknown. Royal then throws the body into a mysterious void, but someone suddenly shines a flashlight on him.

The scene flashes back to three days earlier, where Royal wakes up next to his wife, Cecilia. She shares a recurring dream about their missing daughter-in-law, Rebecca, reuniting with their granddaughter. Cecilia asks Royal to keep the dream a secret, which he promises to do.
