The movie opens at Truman High School, where a group of students is gossiping during lunch. Taylor, a brunette girl, approaches them but is rejected because their table is a "skeeve-free zone." Humiliated, she turns to April, an overweight classmate who is eating alone. April tries to console Taylor and apologizes for the bullying, but this only angers Taylor, who insults April and leaves. The following day, Taylor is found crying in the bathroom when April confronts her, asking if she really thinks she's ugly. Taylor apologizes for her previous comment and attempts to explain that she didn’t mean it.
