The story begins with Tommy Oldham waking up aboard the Hazana, a ship designed by her lover, Richard. She is disoriented and bruised, quickly realizing that Richard is missing after a fierce storm. As she searches the deck and calls for him, despair sets in when she contemplates the possibility that he might be dead.
