The story begins in a typical suburban town where a family in a station wagon heads off on a road trip to California. The mother, Lucille Larusso, announces to her son, Daniel, that they’re heading to "the worst place in the world," as she jokingly refers to California. After a long journey with various stops, they finally arrive at their destination. While Lucille is excited, Daniel looks unhappy about the move.
