The story is set in a region ruled by King Raja Puran Singh, who oversees several provinces, each with its own chief and villagers. The king collects heavy taxes from the villagers—90% of their crops—keeping a small portion for himself and passing most to the British. This oppressive system creates a stark contrast between the impoverished villagers and the lavish lifestyle of the British living in a military base called a Cantonment.
