In California, Mister and Mrs. Livingston's baby, Jimmy, is born with no immunity, forcing him to live in isolation in a plastic bubble to protect him from germs. Mrs. Livingston becomes extremely over-protective, delaying his return home until he's four and scaring away neighborhood kids to keep them from interacting with him. Jimmy’s room is designed with a decontamination hatch and retractable arms for parental affection, while his education is limited to sanitized content approved by Mrs. Livingston, who homeschools him with extreme nationalist propaganda. When local kids mock him by wrapping themselves in bubble wrap, Mrs. Livingston drives them away with cold water.
