A mysterious figure kills users, leading FBI agents Peters and Greer to investigate. The murders are linked to surrogates from Virtual Self Industries. The hunt for the killer, Miles, reveals a conspiracy involving surrogates and weapons. Eventually, the Prophet behind the Dreads is revealed to be controlled by the father of surrogacy, Lionel. Peters tries to upload a virus to kill surrogate users but is stopped by Greer, who saves the day and shuts down all surrogates. The world adapts to life without surrogates as humanity emerges anew.
