A car drives through the British countryside with sleeping American woman, Greta Evans, on the back seat. She arrives at the house she'll be working at and is informed by the driver that the owners are out. Greta explores the house, finding a painting of the family she'll work for. Hearing a noise upstairs, she encounters Malcolm, the grocery boy, who shows her around the kitchen. They chat while putting away groceries, with Malcolm guessing she's American and running away from someone. Greta changes the subject, asking about the family.
