While working at a retirement home, Travis gets laid off due to budget cuts. He joins an anti-war protest, where he saves a woman from a soldier's attack. Travis then meets Bay at a bar, who reveals she's moving to India. Struggling financially, Travis decides to participate in a lucrative behavioral experiment. He meets fellow volunteers Michael and Benjy, and Dr. Archaleta explains they will simulate prison conditions. Travis passes the initial tests and moves forward in the selection process, hoping to earn some much-needed money.
