The film opens in 1050 as Viking ships raid a Norman monastery, where they discover a hidden wolf cub instead of the expected treasure. They take the cub back to Norway, but it turns hostile, killing the Vikings and escaping into the wilderness. Fast forward 1,000 years, the focus shifts to Thalberg, a 17-year-old girl living in the Norwegian town of Nao. Her family has recently moved there due to her mother, Liv, being transferred to the local police force after the death of Thalberg's father. Thalberg harbors resentment toward her mother, indirectly blaming her for her father's death.
