For five years, the Five Families went through turmoil, with public killings and internal struggles. Led by Joe Bonanno, Tommy Lucchese, Carlo Gambino, Joe Profaci, and Vito Genovese, the latter remained powerful despite facing drug charges in 1958. Vito Genovese worried that fellow Family member Joseph Valachi, also in prison, might betray their code of silence. Valachi, a minor figure in the Genovese Family, feared for his life.
