The movie begins at a high school library where Yuki Hasei, the protagonist, searches for a book. He selects a bulky one using a library card belonging to Kaori Fujimia. Yuki smells the card strangely, only for Kaori to appear and take it back. After school, Yuki misses his stop on the metro and leaves his book behind, but Kaori returns it to him the next day at school.
