The movie starts with Ashley preparing for her first day at a new school. Her mother helps her, and they arrive at the school where Ashley requests to make a solo entrance. Meanwhile, Ashley's mother, Julie, is introduced as the drama teacher. In class, the history teacher, Kevin, dressed as a warrior, teaches about violence and suffering in ancient Gladiators. Ashley has disturbing memories of her past school. Max warns her about the school gang, while Kevin emphasizes the virtues of loyalty, humility, and charity to the students.
