A scientist tests his teleportation machine on himself and transforms into a human-insect hybrid after merging his DNA with that of a fly. At a science convention, journalist Ronnie interviews eccentric scientist Seth Brundle, who showcases his teleportation invention called telepods. Despite initial doubts, Ronnie witnesses the successful teleportation of an object. Seth asks her to keep it secret in exchange for exclusive access to the telepods' development. Their relationship deepens as they experiment with teleporting living beings, resulting in a failed test with a baboon. Seth's disappointment leads Ronnie to comfort him, sparking a romantic connection between them.
