How does one actually start marketing? As the title suggests, I understand there are tons and tons of advice and gurus preaching that you simply market the product by filming product contents for social media or pumping ads but how do brands actually kick off and form an engaging community? Word of mouth is one of the considerations by it wouldnt get far if the product doesn’t stand out too much from what already exists. How else do I genuinely build an organic community?

Building an organic community for your brand requires a thoughtful and strategic approach. Here are some steps you can take to start marketing and form an engaging community:

  1. Define your target audience: Understand who your ideal customers are, their demographics, interests, and pain points. This will help you tailor your marketing efforts to resonate with them.

  2. Develop a unique value proposition: Identify what sets your product or brand apart from competitors. Determine the unique benefits and value it offers to customers. This will make it easier to attract and engage your target audience.

  3. Create compelling and shareable content: Develop high-quality content that educates, entertains, or inspires your target audience. This can include blog articles, videos, podcasts, infographics, or social media posts. Make sure your content is relevant, valuable, and shareable. For example, if you sell fitness products, you could create workout tutorials, healthy recipes, or motivational stories.

  4. Utilize social media platforms: Establish a presence on social media platforms where your target audience is active. Share your content regularly, engage with your audience, and respond to their comments and messages. Encourage conversations and create a sense of community by asking questions, running contests, or hosting live Q&A sessions. For instance, Lululemon, a popular athletic apparel brand, engages its community through social media by sharing user-generated content and hosting events like yoga classes.

  5. Leverage influencer marketing: Collaborate with influencers who have a strong following and are relevant to your niche. They can help promote your brand or product to their audience, increasing your reach and credibility. Look for influencers who align with your brand values and have an engaged community. For example, Glossier, a skincare and makeup brand, has successfully leveraged influencer marketing to build a loyal community around their products.

  6. Encourage user-generated content: Encourage your customers to create and share content related to your brand or product. This can be done by running contests, featuring customer testimonials, or providing incentives for sharing their experiences. User-generated content not only builds a sense of community but also acts as social proof for your brand. GoPro, a company that sells action cameras, built a strong community by encouraging users to share their adventure videos using their cameras.

  7. Provide exceptional customer service: Delivering outstanding customer service is crucial for building a loyal and engaged community. Respond promptly to customer inquiries, address their concerns, and go above and beyond to exceed their expectations. This will not only help retain existing customers but also attract new ones through positive word-of-mouth. Zappos, an online shoe and clothing retailer, is renowned for its exceptional customer service, which has helped them build a loyal community of customers.

Remember, building an organic community takes time and consistent effort. By focusing on providing value, engaging with your audience, and fostering a sense of belonging, you can create a community that is passionate about your brand.
