COTABATO CITY — In a significant move towards fostering peace and security in Mindanao, the 6th Infantry Division of the Philippine Army has successfully collected 36 unlicensed firearms from residents of Bagumbayan town, Sultan Kudarat. This initiative, part of a broader disarmament campaign, aims to ensure a peaceful electoral process in 2005 while reinforcing the government’s commitment to peace efforts in the region. The voluntary surrender of these firearms reflects a community's willingness to cooperate in promoting stability and safety in an area historically plagued by conflict.
The SALW Program: A Step Towards Disarmament
The Small Arms and Light Weapons Management Program (SALW) is at the heart of the 6th Infantry Division's disarmament efforts. Implemented across several provinces in Central Mindanao, including Maguindanao del Norte, Cotabato, and Sultan Kudarat, the SALW Program seeks to reduce the prevalence of unlicensed firearms in the region. By encouraging residents to voluntarily surrender their weapons, the program aims to mitigate violence and promote a culture of peace.
Major General Antonio Nafarrete, commander of the 6th ID, expressed gratitude to the residents of Bagumbayan for their cooperation. “The commitment shown by the community is an encouraging sign as we work together for a safer environment,” he stated.
The Collection Event: A Community Effort
The recent collection of 36 firearms took place during a surrender rite held in Barangay Kapaya on November 4. Residents turned in an impressive array of weapons, including assault rifles, M79 grenade launchers, shotguns, and revolvers. The successful event was facilitated by the efforts of local officials, including Lt. Col. Tristan Rey Vallescas, battalion commander of the 7th Infantry Battalion, and Brig. Gen. Michael Santos of the 603rd Infantry Brigade.
This collaborative effort underscores the importance of local leadership and community engagement in disarmament initiatives. By working together, the military and local officials can build trust and encourage more residents to participate in the program.
A Historical Context of Disarmament in Mindanao
Since 2021, the 6th Infantry Division has collected over 2,000 combat weapons from various towns and cities in Central Mindanao. This includes firearms surrendered by local government officials and traditional Moro community leaders. Notably, some of the weapons collected have come from former members of the Dawlah Islamiya and the Bangsamoro Freedom Fighters, who have participated in reconciliation programs aimed at reintegrating them into mainstream society.
This historical context highlights the ongoing challenges faced in Mindanao, where the legacy of conflict has led to a proliferation of unlicensed firearms. The 6th ID's commitment to disarmament is a vital part of the broader strategy to foster peace and stability in the region.
As Major General Antonio Nafarrete noted, “The surrender of firearms is not just about reducing the number of weapons; it is about restoring faith in our communities and ensuring a peaceful future for the next generation.”
The recent collection of 36 unlicensed firearms by the 6th Infantry Division is a promising step towards achieving a safer and more peaceful Mindanao. By actively engaging with residents and fostering a culture of cooperation, the military is paving the way for a successful disarmament campaign. As the region looks towards the future, initiatives like the SALW Program will be crucial in ensuring a peaceful electoral process and reinforcing the commitment to peace in Mindanao. The journey towards lasting peace is long, but with continued support from the community, progress is certainly achievable.
