Content borrowing? I’ve heard of two ways to generate content for your site. 1. Make it yourself. 2. Hire someone. But what about borrowing? Are there specific restrictions on content of others and is the internet essentially a free space, as in once its out there it is up for grabs... Anyone have any ideas? Thanks

Content borrowing refers to the practice of using someone else's content on your own website or platform without permission or proper attribution. While it may seem convenient or tempting to borrow content from others, it is important to understand that there are legal and ethical considerations involved.

  1. Legal Restrictions: Copyright law protects original works of authorship, including text, images, videos, and other forms of content. As soon as someone creates content, it is automatically protected by copyright, whether or not it is marked with the copyright symbol (©). This means that you cannot use someone else's content without their permission, unless it falls under certain exceptions such as fair use.

Fair use is a legal doctrine that allows limited use of copyrighted material without permission from the copyright owner. However, fair use is a complex concept and is subject to interpretation. It generally depends on factors such as the purpose and character of the use, the nature of the copyrighted work, the amount and substantiality of the portion used, and the effect of the use upon the potential market for the original work.

Using content without permission or proper attribution can result in legal consequences, including copyright infringement claims and potential financial penalties.

  1. Ethical Considerations: Even if you believe your use of someone else's content falls under fair use, it is important to consider the ethical implications. Borrowing content without permission or attribution can be seen as plagiarism or intellectual property theft, which can damage your reputation and credibility.

Properly attributing content to its original creator is not only a legal requirement in some cases but also a way to show respect for the work and creativity of others. It also helps build trust with your audience and fosters a sense of community within the online content ecosystem.

Examples:

  • Copying and pasting an entire article or blog post from another website onto your own without permission or attribution.
  • Using images or graphics from the internet without obtaining the necessary licenses or permissions.
  • Reposting someone else's video on your YouTube channel without proper credit or permission.

My profession is to create this content you speak of. Whilst it hurts my business when content is stolen, but I understand that I don't have the manpower to do much. So I'd say in general it depends on from whom you're stealing the content. In general, I recommend staying far away from it. There's so many free stock content websites now a days, a lot free for commercial use as well, with great content. Just add some words to it, make it your own

Google will penalize you for duplicate content at best; the best practice is to use all original content.

Google won't rank you as high as the original source and may even chose to hide non-original / stolen content.

The internet is not up for grabs. It is illegal to steal from others. That content is intellectual property that someone else owns.

It's all fun and games until you get the letter from the lawyer.
