From Call-In to Home Run: How a Radio Caller Fired Up Bryce Harper on the Field

41

Chuck from Mt. Airy is a frequent caller to WIP, a Philadelphia radio station, and even the two-time MVP Bryce Harper is familiar with him.

On Tuesday, Chuck phoned in to the show hosted by Jon Marks and Ike Reese, just hours before Harper's Philadelphia Phillies were set to face off against the Los Angeles Angels. Harper's attention was captured by Chuck's call.

"It's funny, I was driving in today and I'm listening to WIP like I do a lot in the 2 o'clock hour," Harper shared with reporters after the game. "A guy named Chuck called in, and he calls in a lot. He’s hilarious. He was talking about our team and talking about me and stuff.

"I walked into the training room, and I was like, 'I'm going to hit a home run tonight for Chuck.' That guy had me fired up, man."

Chuck from Mt. Airy exclaimed during his call, "Bryce Harper, listen man… I'm going to shake that man's hand one day. He's one of the best. If he's listening, listen man. Bryce, get your ass down to Chickie’s & Pete’s whenever you get a chance, man, and come meet me, and come meet the people that love you. Because you are the man, and we go where Bryce Harper goes."

Chuck caught wind of Harper's response and couldn't contain his excitement.

"This is freakin’ amazing, man. It just put a smile on my face all day man," Chuck exclaimed during a conversation with WIP hosts Joe Giglio and Hugh Douglas the following morning. "I’ve never heard an athlete at the superstardom of Bryce Harper call out a WIP caller... I’m a lunatic. Everyone knows that. And for Bryce to actually sit there and listen to guys like us. … Man, it's amazing."

As fate would have it, Harper hit his 299th career home run on that Tuesday. He went on to hit his 300th home run the next day in a game against the Angels, even though the Phillies lost 10-8.

This marked the third consecutive day that Harper hit a home run. In his last nine games, he has an impressive batting average of .471, accompanied by six home runs.
