"Opening Doors to Success: A Better Chance's Impact on Immigrant Children's Education"

4.4K

"A Better Chance" (ABC), is dedicated to providing educational opportunities by identifying, recruiting and developing leaders among underrepresented young people of color through out the United States. They believe in equal access to quality education for all students, with a mission to increase substantially the number of well educated young people of color who are capable of assuming positions of leadership in American society.

One of the success stories that showcases the impact of the ABC program is Natalie Esikumo. Natalie is a 2nd generation immigrant whose parents immigrated from Kenya. Natalie was born in Boston but was raised in Nairobi Kenya in her formative years. She moved back to the US when she was 8 years and joined Mary E. Baker Elementary School in Brockton in the 3rd grade, and she later joined South Shore Charter School for middle school.

From the onset, Natalie's parents realized that Natalie had leadership qualities and supported her in pursuing many extra-curricula activities that kept her engaged at school and in her community. While in middle school, her mom discovered the ABC program through a parent at the school. It was purely by chance - they were watching a soccer game while chatting when the parent mentioned it. Natalie's mom went ahead to research about the ABC program because it sounded like something that could benefit her daughter. She went ahead and applied blindly and as fate would have it, Natalie was accepted into the program. Natalie's mom has gone ahead to be an advocate for ABC in her community advising parents on the benefits of the program and assisting them with the application process.

Natalie attended the "Ridgefield A Better Chance Program,"(RABC). She is currently a rising Junior at Boston College, pursuing her academic dreams and making a positive impact in her community.

Natalie's journey exemplifies how "A Better Chance" provides educational opportunities for immigrant children. By participating in the RABC program, Natalie had access to a supportive community, academic resources, and mentorship that helped her thrive academically.

Moreover, "A Better Chance" helps students like Natalie access scholarship opportunities, making it possible for them to attend prestigious colleges and universities. This financial support ensures that immigrant children have the same opportunities as their peers, regardless of their socioeconomic background.

Through programs like the Ridgefield A Better Chance Program, "A Better Chance" creates a nurturing environment where immigrant children can overcome barriers and succeed academically. These programs often provide housing, academic support, and a network of mentors who guide students throughout their educational journey.

By supporting students of color, "A Better Chance" not only transforms individual lives but also contributes to a more inclusive and diverse society. Natalie's success story is just one example of the many lives impacted by the organization's dedication to educational opportunities for all.
