The Pentax K-3 Mark III builds on the Pentax legacy, incorporating a back-illuminated CMOS image sensor with approximately 25.73 effective megapixels. The camera produces super-high-resolution images by coupling this sensor with an AA (anti-aliasing)-filter-free optical design. A new, super-bright optical viewfinder delivers a nearly 100% field of view and magnification of approximately 1.05 times. With a newly developed high-refraction glass prism, the viewfinder provides a wide field of view equivalent to that of a full-frame SLR, fully immersing the photographer in a shooting. It features a high-performance, five-axis shake-reduction (SR) system, and the innovative Pixel Shift Resolution System. The high-definition 3.2-inch touch-screen LCD monitor—the first touch screen in the Pentax K series, improves efficiency and operability.
The Pentax K-3 Mark III is equipped with a back-illuminated CMOS image sensor with approximately 25.73 effective megapixels. The camera produces super-high-resolution images by coupling this sensor with an AA (anti-aliasing)-filter-free optical design. The newly developed, high-performance PRIME V imaging engine and new-generation accelerator unit delivers well-defined images with minimal noise while retaining high-resolution reproduction at all sensitivities — even in the super-low or super-high range. By greatly improving the noise-reduction performance at high-sensitivity ranges, it boasts a top sensitivity of ISO 1600000 to extend the range of scenes that can be photographed.
The Pentax K-3 Mark III features a high-definition, 3.2-inch LCD monitor with approximately 1,620,000 pixels. Incorporating touch-screen control for the first time in the Pentax K series, this monitor provides intuitive operation of monitor functions, including menu selection and image zooming during playback. Its air-gapless construction effectively reduces reflections and the dispersion of light to improve visibility during outdoor shooting. The viewfinder eyepiece is designed to protrude away from the LCD monitor screen, so the user’s nose does not contact the camera body.
The Pentax K-3 Mark III features a newly developed SAFOX 13 phase-matching AF sensor module for dependable, high-precision autofocus operations. It has 101 focus sensors, 25 of which are cross-type sensors positioned in the middle, to assure pinpoint focus on the subject at minimum brightness levels as low as -4 EV. Also, by featuring a new, high-capacity RGBIr image sensor with approximately 307,000 pixels and a newly developed image-tracking algorithm, the camera also assures accurate tracking of subjects moving at varying speed or in an irregular motion. A newly installed AF point selector lever allows the user to select the desired focus point more intuitively (up to 41 points).
Supported by the combination of the new, high-density RGBIr image sensor and the high-performance PRIME V imaging engine, the Pentax Real-time Scene Analysis System instantly detects the subject’s face and eyes using advanced image recognition technology, then makes real-time analysis of their movement. This assists the camera in optimizing exposure settings and improving autofocusing.
Thanks to a newly developed mirror-driving mechanism assuring high-speed, high-accuracy control of the mirror and shutter mechanisms, and the high-performance PRIME V imaging engine that performs high-speed data transmission, the Pentax K-3 Mark III provides high-speed drive continuous shooting — with a max speed of approximately 12 images per second in the AF.S mode or approximately 11 images per second in the AF.C mode.
This large-aperture standard zoom lens is the latest model of the new-generation Star series, which is designed to provide the best possible image quality and accommodate the super-high-performance cameras of the future. Its newly designed optics assures greatly improved contrast and sharpness compared to previous models while compensating various aberrations to a minimum and delivering sharp, clear images not only in the middle of the image field but at the edges. By incorporating one ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass optical element, one anomalous dispersion glass optical element, and two ED (Extra-low Dispersion) aspherical glass optical elements, it effectively minimizes chromatic aberration over the entire zoom range.
The newly designed zoom optics features a lighter, more compact focus-lens group. This focus-lens group is driven by an advanced PLM (Pulse Motor), which assures smooth, high-speed autofocus operation with minimized noise. A redesigned focus mechanism provides a minimum focusing distance of just 0.3 meters and a maximum magnification of 0.24 times, making this a handy lens for capturing all types of subjects — from everyday snapshots to close-ups and landscapes.
The incorporation of a high-performance PLM (Pulse Motor) provides much-improved autofocus performance in both speed and precision. Despite the large maximum aperture of f/2.8, this standard zoom lens assures outstanding maneuverability and portability — the most distinguished features of lenses exclusively designed for use with APS-C-format digital cameras — to accommodate all types of applications, from scenic and nature photography to snap-shooting and portraiture.
The 10-group, 16-element optical system (including four aspherical optical elements) assures superb resolving power and delivers super-clear, high-contrast images from the middle of the image field to the edges. The high-grade, multi-layer HD Coating, which reduces the average reflectance in the visible ray spectrum to less than 50% that of conventional multi-layer coatings, effectively minimizes flare and ghost images even in demanding lighting conditions such as backlighting.
The focus-lens elements are directly driven by a PLM (Pulse Motor), providing much-improved focusing speed (approx. 2.2 times faster in the wide-angle range, or approx. 1.5 times faster in the telephoto range, compared to the smc PENTAX-DA 16-50mm F2.8ED AL[IF] SDM), while effectively minimizing noise for quieter operation. Manual-focus operation of the power-assisted focus mechanism has also been upgraded to optimize the precision and response of detecting the focus ring. As the result, the focus-lens elements shift more efficiently and flawlessly in synchronization with the focus-ring operation.
When mounted on a compatible KAF4-mount camera body, this zoom lens assures flawless, high-precision exposure control, not only in still-image shooting, but also in video recording. Even when there are considerable differences in brightness during video shooting, its electromagnetic diaphragm control mechanism allows the user to capture video clips using automatic exposure control. In combination with some compatible cameras, the PLM (Pulse Motor) assures smooth focus tracking operation and flawless exposure control, while considerably reducing annoying noise generated by focus and diaphragm control operations during video recording.
This lens features the All Weather (AW) construction to prevent the intrusion of dust and water into the lens interior. Pair it with a PENTAX dustproof, weather-resistant digital SLR camera body for creative shooting in rain or mist, or other locations prone to water splashes.
The PENTAX O-GPS2 provides reliable and high-precision positioning data gathered from GPS in the U.S., QZSS in Japan, GLONASS, and Galileo. When the PENTAX O-GPS2 is mounted on a compatible PENTAX digital SLR camera*, the user can record the latitude, longitude, altitude, universal time coordinated (UTC), and aspect of shooting locations onto captured images. Image files carrying the location data can be used to track shooting locations and review location data on a PC. The location data stored on such files also makes it much easier to sort and file recorded images.
By coupling the location data with the camera’s SR (Shake Reduction) system, the unit offers a range of unique, advanced applications, including the Astrotracer function, which makes it easy to capture stellar images of the night sky, Simple Navigation function, which calculates the direction and distance to a given destination from a current position, and Electronic Compass function which displays the camera’s direction on its LCD monitor with great precision
The O-GPS2 mounts on the hot shoe of a compatible camera and records the latitude, longitude, altitude, universal time coordinated (UTC), and direction of the shooting location onto captured images. In addition to GPS in the US and QZSS in Japan, GLONASS and Galileo can be newly received.
When mounted on the corresponding PENTAX digital SLR camera body, the O-GPS2 also offers the advanced Astrotracer function,** which couples the unit with the camera’s SR (Shake Reduction) system for the effortless tracing and photography of celestial bodies. The unit calculates the movement of stars, planets, and other bodies using the latitude obtained from the location data and the camera’s alignment data (horizontal and vertical inclinations and aspects) obtained from its magnetic and acceleration sensors, then shifts the camera’s image sensor in synchronization with the movement of the objects.*** In the resulting image, stars and other bodies are captured as solid points rather than blurry streaks, even during extended exposures. It also makes astrophotography much simpler, as it requires only a tripod and eliminates the need for an additional accessory such as an equatorial telescope. In addition to the normal Astrotracer: Type 1, Astrotracer: Type 2, available only when the O-GPS2 is used with the PENTAX K-3 Mark III, makes the image sensor follow the movement of the celestial body at half the speed of Type 1. The photographer can suppress the flow of the landscape on the ground and shoot both the stars and the landscape in a well-balanced manner.
** This function is available only when the O-GPS2 is mounted on a PENTAX digital SLR camera body equipped with an SR system.
The O-GPS2 offers a Simple Navigation function, which calculates the direction and distance to a given destination from the current position. The user can either locate destinations using location data stored on recorded images or register and/or assign them by uploading location data created on a PC.
The O-GPS2 has an Electronic Compass function which displays the camera’s direction on its LCD monitor with great precision. Using its magnetic sensor and the location data, the unit indicates the aspect in relation to the true north. The user can also record directional data on captured images.
