Samuel Louis Smith 2022 Spear Vyd. Chardonnay, Santa Rita Hills

Samuel Louis Smith is what you would call a micro-négociant. He studied at UC Davis and made wine in the Northern Rhone, Bordeaux and the Willamette Valley before returning to California where he became winemaker at Morgan Vineyards for several years before staring his own brand. Organic viticulture, mountainous sites, and minimal intervention in the cellar are tenets of the brand. Spear is a young, yet very exciting site in the heart of the Sta. Rita Hills. Planted in 2014 and farmed organically, its varied elevation reaches 900 feet and soils are comprised of marine sedimentary clay and sand. Their chard block is primarily sedimentary clay. This wine sees 50% malolactic fermentation with native alcoholic and malolactic fermentations occurred in barrel. It goes through 10 months élévage in 17% new, 17% second-fill, and 66% neutral French oak barrels with only six barrels produced!
